January 18th - The Day of Childlike Fancy

January 18th - The Day of Childlike Fancy

Those born on January 18 are never far removed from their childlike and playful selves. They may be chided from time to time for being naive, but rarely can they be criticized for being calculating, avaricious or opportunistic. Those born on this day are very much in tuned to what comes naturally. They enjoy having fun, but are not particularly fond of weighty matters. Indeed, they may suffer greatly when demands of the adult world are imposed on them. Consequently, the great challenge for January 18 people is to mature into an adult role but preserve their sense of playfulness.

January 18 people usually make excellent parents themselves. They have a natural understanding of what pre-adolescent children like. They may, however, have a great deal of trouble with their own parents, particularly during their adolescence and late teens. Departing from childhood is often tragically difficult for January 18 people, and their parents must be extremely sensitive to their traditional needs, or insisting they abruptly give up childlike habits. Such demands will only foment discord and plant seeds of rebellion.

January 18 people like to keep life light but also demand a heavy dose of excitement and adventure to keep them stimulated. When they are unable to find peak experiences in their daily lives, they may retreat to a fantasy world where everything is allowed and everything possible. Since their joys and interests are then internalized, they may unfortunately come to give up more and more of their outer world, in extreme cases withdrawing into their original childhood realm. More highly evolved January 18 people are able to first sublimate and then project their fantasies out on the real world, not only summoning up peak experiences but also developing ideas, creative original products or perhaps just manifesting a highly unique outlook and approach to the art of living.

Where love is concerned, January 18 people tend to attract more practical, down-to-earth types who perhaps feel gratified by an awakening of their own childlike nature. A successful relationship of this kind inevitably provides a deep sense of security for both January 18 people and their more grounded partner, and is thus very heavily based on mutual trust and sharing.

Generally speaking, January 18 people may be happy even when working in mundane jobs, as long as they have free time which is absolutely their own to enjoy as they please. However, for the reasons stated earlier, it is best for them when they can integrate their more fanciful side in a creative or stimulating work environment. Without such stimulation, those born on this day may experience difficulties concentrating, especially when performing tasks of a repetitive nature, and may even be caught flagrantly daydreaming.

January 17th - The Day of the Heavyweight

Those born on January 17 are some of the most powerfully direct individuals of the year (can you say Betty White?). This is in a large part because they usually have a very clear goal, a firm idea of what it is that they wish to accomplish at any given time. They are also able to effectively assess their chances for success based on past experience and the difficulties that lie ahead.

Early on in life, January 17 people learn what it is that makes a human being tick. They come to understand the importance of motivation, that needs are what impel people to action and often determine how they will respond to any given situation (needs themselves created by basic human emotions - love, hate, fear, shame, guilt, etc.) Most born on this day also realize early on that is the person in control of him/herself, who exercises self-discipline, who succeeds in life.

More highly developed January 17 people are in touch with their own drives and desires and are able to inspire themselves repeatedly to rise to life’s challenges. Less highly developed individuals born on this day focus on how they may control their environment without first knowing themselves. They can become masters of manipulation (less a covert manipulation than an outright handling of others).

Whether physically imposing or not, January 17 people have a commanding presence that tends to dominate most occasions. Because, as mentioned, their purpose generally so well-defined, and they display such remarkable control over themselves (at least outer control), others may feel somewhat intimidated. Those born on this day do not ask permission to be who they are. They tend to throw off those inhibitions which keep the average person from expressing talents and the more dynamic side of their nature. Indeed, January 17 people are more likely to be concerned with individual achievement and are usually firm supporters of the rights of the individual. Thus they rarely make the best team players, and usually operate better on their own.

It is not surprising that the greatest danger for January 17 people is losing touch with the feelings, concerns and philosophy of others. Because those born on this day brook no compromise of their plans, they may cast associates, co-workers, even friends in an antagonistic position relative to themselves. They may also drive less powerful individuals (who feel they cannot compare compete with January 17 person in the open) underground to nurse grudges and bide their time. Thus it is critical that January 17 people firmly ground themselves in a social context while strengthening friendships and family ties. Above all, they must not allow themselves to become isolated or force those around them into static or undesirable roles.

2 - My Personal Observation

So, since it’s the 17th of January today, we’re officially moving into the Capricorn-Aquarius cusp (the cusp of Mystery and Imagination). This puts a completely new spin on our classic, earthy, serious, ambitious Capricorn and puts an airy fluidity into the mix, a newly presentable confidence. I can say this from a personal perspective. The Secret Language of Birthdays has a following book called The Secret Language of Relationships (they create relationships based on the personology system in the first book) and it matches me up with this magical cusp; they’re one of my best love matches and I’ve definitely met a few to say that it’s been really fluid and easy-going between the two of us. But, being a Virgo and being as…. particular as I am, I need stability; they lend this with our mutual element. Makes sense? Yes :) But the Aquarius influence puts a more unusual, unconventional, easy-going twist on Capricorn; cusps contain a special, natural mix because they’re basically two signs merged together. A lot of cusps tend to do well with other cusp signs as well.

VENUS - Your Love Potential

“Love makes the world go round,” or so they say. As humans, we tend to love the qualities we value most when we see them in other people, whether or not we can claim these qualities as our own. Often, what we appreciate in others is what we feel we lack ourselves. Sometimes, we may try to absorb these qualities, almost as if by osmosis, through our relationships with the people close to us. At other times, our partners may serve as mirrors for us, reflecting our own special qualities. Through our close ties with other people, we gain new appreciation for the talents and qualities that make life worthwhile, and which help us to achieve a greater sense of personal balance.

In the birth chart, the planet Venus indicates your love potential. It reveals much about your personal love nature, how you give and receive love, and what you value in relationships. It also shows the kinds of people you’re attracted to and with whom you are likely to be most compatible. Venus not only indicates who you love, but what you love as well.

PLUTO was predicted by Percival Lowell and its glyph represents both its own first two letters and Lowell’s initials. The dark god of the underworld, Pluto, lends volcanic energies to those born under the sign of Scorpio. Plutonic areas are traditionally those of money, power and sexuality. The planet Pluto represents the inexorable forces and events which govern our lives, and events which no easy deal can be struck. Harnessing such powers to achieve positive transformations is essential to a person’s development.

MARS is represented by the biological male symbol. Traditionally, the province of the god Mars was war, a quality underlined be the reddish appearance of the planet in the night sky. Originally, Mars ruled the sign Aries and Scorpio (sidenote: they are, in my personal opinion, two of the most intense and blunt signs in the whole zodiac) but in the twentieth century the rulership of the latter sign has passed to Pluto. For both men and women, martian energy is traditionally aggressive, adventuresome, highly motivated to succeed, and in general unstoppable.
